What Paint Should You Use on Trim and Doors?

People ask us this all the time during estimates:

“So… what paint do you use on trim and doors?”

It’s a good question. Because if you’ve ever tried painting trim yourself, you know it’s nothing like rolling walls. Trim gets touched constantly. Doors get slammed, scratched, wiped down. And when the finish looks bad; streaky, dull, chipping…. it’s all you notice when you walk in the room.

This guide will tell you exactly what works, what doesn’t, and what we actually use when we paint trim and doors in Colorado Springs homes.

Why Trim Paint Is Different (and Why It Matters)

Walls are forgiving. Trim is not.

You need paint that:

  • Dries smooth without leaving brush marks everywhere
  • Gets hard enough to survive everyday life
  • Doesn’t scuff when you bump it with a vacuum or a shoe
  • Stays clean when you wipe it down
  • Holds up in Colorado’s bone-dry air

Most people grab whatever’s left over from their wall paint. Big mistake. You’ll end up with a soft, streaky finish that starts looking rough within months.

The 3 Things Great Trim Paint Does

1. It’s Actually an Enamel

Don’t use wall paint on trim. You want a water-based enamel that dries hard like the old oil paints, but without the smell or the yellowing.

2. It Smooths Itself Out

Good trim paint levels as it dries. That means your brush strokes disappear and you get that clean, almost-sprayed look.

3. It Takes a Beating

Doors get kicked, grabbed, and slammed. Baseboards get hit by dogs, kids, furniture, and vacuums. Cheap paint won’t survive it.

What We Use: Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel

This is what goes on every trim and door we paint, from custom homes in Flying Horse to older houses in Old North End to rentals in Briargate.

Why this one?

Because it’s the toughest, smoothest trim paint you can buy for homes. Period.

Here’s why it works so well:

Hard, Tough Finish

It cures into a rock-solid enamel. Feels like old oil paint, but without the yellow tint or fumes. Perfect for doors and high-traffic trim.

Melts Away Brush Marks

This is the best part. Emerald Urethane flows out as it dries, so your brush strokes just… disappear. Even if you’re brushing it on, it looks sprayed.

Built for Colorado

At our altitude and humidity (or lack of it), a lot of paints dry too fast and get gummy. Emerald stays workable long enough to level properly.

Actually Holds Up

Kids. Dogs. Cleaning spray. Daily wear. This stuff can handle it without chipping or scuffing.

Works on Everything

Wood, MDF, painted trim, old stained trim, hollow-core doors, solid doors, built-ins, cabinets; it sticks and it lasts.

What Sheen Should You Pick?

We usually go with:

Satin – Softer, more modern look. Clean and subtle.

Semi-Gloss – Classic trim finish. Pops more, easier to clean. Great for busy homes or rentals.

We don’t do high-gloss much anymore, it shows every little dent and imperfection in the wood.

Can You Use This Paint Yourself?

Yeah, you can buy it. But fair warning, it’s not beginner-friendly.

Emerald Urethane levels beautifully, but only if you:

  • Prep the surface right
  • Sand between coats
  • Apply it thin
  • Use good brushes (not the $3 ones)
  • Know how to avoid lap marks and keep edges wet

We’ve repainted a lot of DIY jobs where someone bought the right paint but didn’t know how to use it. The paint wasn’t the problem, the process was.

What Does Trim Painting Cost Around Here?

Rough numbers we see in Colorado Springs:

  • Baseboards (whole house): $650–$1,200
  • Trim + doors in one room: $350–$900
  • Full interior trim and doors: $3,500–$7,500+
  • One door: $95–$185

Good materials and proper prep aren’t cheap. But they last.

Should You Use Emerald Urethane?

If you want trim and doors that look:

  • Smooth
  • Clean
  • Professional
  • Durable

And you want them to stay that way for years without yellowing, chipping, or looking beat up, yeah, use Emerald Urethane.

It’s what we use in our own homes. It’s what we trust.
